About the course
Understand the Qur'an at Bilqalam Institute is a Quranic Arabic course for anyone who reads the Qur'an but doesn't understand what they're reading. It rests on a fact that brings the goal much closer than you'd think: around 1,500 words make up about 85% of the words in the Qur'an, because they repeat so often. So we start with the most frequent words, add the sarf patterns that let you draw meaning from thousands of words through their roots, and the core nahw that ties words into sentences, then apply it all to ayat from the Mushaf, until you begin to understand what you read and hear in your salah. Classes are live and one-to-one, with a report after every class.
How does the course work?
In the free trial class, the teacher checks your reading and sets your starting point: if you read confidently, you go straight into the curriculum; if your reading needs work, the teacher combines reading foundations with the meanings. Each live one-to-one class then moves between new words, a sarf or nahw point, and practice on ayat you recite in your salah, at times you choose around your schedule. Every class report is saved to your account on the site, with the words you learned and what to review.

- Follow how an ayah is built with core nahw
- Understand the surahs of salah and daily adhkar directly
- Grasp the general meaning of an ayah without leaning fully on a translation
Who is this course for?
This course is for teens and adults who read the Qur'an and want to understand what they read. You only need to read the letters and vowels; no prior Arabic is required.

This course is taught by male and female teachers who specialize in Quranic Arabic and in teaching it to non-native speakers, and you choose the teacher who suits you. If the fit isn't right, we'll switch teachers at no cost.

Is it true that 1,500 words cover 85% of the Qur'an?
This figure is the basis of the book the course is built on, How to Understand 85% of Quran Words. It means that around 1,500 words repeat so often in the Qur'an that together they make up about 85% of all its words. Once you know their meanings, you understand most of what you read. Full understanding of some passages still needs nahw and tafsir, and that's what we build with you step by step.
I don't know any Arabic. Can I start?
Yes. The course is designed for non-native speakers and explained in English. You just need to read the letters and vowels, and if your reading needs strengthening, your teacher will combine it with the meanings.
How is this different from the Arabic for Kids or Adults courses?
This course focuses on the language of the Qur'an: its words, patterns and structures. The Arabic for Kids and Arabic for Adults courses teach Arabic as a full language for reading, writing and speaking.
Is it suitable for children?
It suits young people who already read well. In the trial class, the teacher decides whether a child is ready for it or needs a reading foundation first.
